In-app payments let drivers start a session and pay for it without a physical card or a separate terminal. Spirii handles the entire payment flow — processing, VAT, and digital receipts — as Merchant of Record, so CPOs receive their revenue without managing any of the financial complexity.

Overview

For CPOs

Receive reliable monthly payouts for every app session on your network. No acquiring setup, no PCI obligations, no dispute management — Spirii handles it.

For eMSPs and branded-app operators

Offer a fully branded payment experience for your drivers, powered by Spirii’s payment infrastructure, without building it yourself.

How it works

Spirii acts as the Merchant of Record for every in-app session. The commercial flow is:
  1. Driver starts a charge. The driver uses the Spirii app or your branded app to start a session at a Spirii-connected charger.
  2. Spirii pre-authorises the driver’s payment method. Spirii places a hold on the driver’s card (or digital wallet) to cover the estimated session cost.
  3. Session completes. When the driver stops charging, Spirii captures the actual amount based on the energy consumed and the tariff at that location.
  4. Driver receives a receipt. A digital receipt lands in the app immediately, itemising the session cost and VAT.
  5. CPO receives the payout. At the end of the billing period, Spirii pays the CPO for all app sessions via a self-billing invoice.
This setup is viable due to the commercial setup where Spirii takes on the responsibility of re-selling electric vehicle recharging from you to the end customer.

Supported payment methods

Spirii partners with Stripe for in-app payments, leveraging their vast support of specific payment methods.
  • All major card issuers such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express and more
  • Apple Pay
  • Google Pay
  • SEPA Direct Debit including iDEAL

Pre-auth and capture

Because EV charging is open-ended — the driver doesn’t know in advance how long they’ll charge — Spirii uses a pre-authorisation and capture model:
  1. Spirii places a hold (pre-auth) on the driver’s payment method when the session starts. The hold amount is set based on the location’s tariff and a reasonable session estimate.
  2. When the session ends, Spirii captures the exact amount. The hold is released and the final charge is applied.
  3. Spirii also supports incremental and decremental authorisation, modifying the hold amount based on final charging costs.
This prevents multiple failed charges if a session runs longer than expected and avoids large unexpected amounts landing on driver statements.
If a driver’s payment method fails, Spirii retries the charge automatically.

Receipts

Every completed session generates a digital receipt, delivered in the app. Receipts include:
  • Session date, duration, and energy consumed
  • Tariff applied and final price
  • VAT rate, amount and information about the vendor
  • Location name and address

Driver experience

Drivers manage their payment methods, view session history, and access receipts from within the app. They are never redirected to a third-party payment page — the checkout is fully embedded in the app experience.
