# Home & work

> Charging at home, at the office, and on public networks — attributed to the right payer and reimbursed on one token.

Electrifying company cars moves refuelling from the filling station to the employee's driveway, which turns a fuel card into something you have to measure, attribute, and pay back.

## Overview

Home and work charging succeeds on three things:

* Every driver able to charge at home, at work, and on the road with one token.
* Home charging measured accurately and reimbursed without manual claims.
* Workplace capacity shared fairly between company cars, employees' own cars, and guests.

The four phases below take the setup from configuration to the monthly cycle:

## Before you start

This guide is for the organisation that employs the drivers: the employer running chargers at its own sites, and the fleet or mobility manager responsible for company cars. Both sides sit in one Spirii account, which is what lets a single token work at the office, at an employee's house, and on a public charger.

Tax treatment of home charging as a benefit differs by market and belongs with your finance and legal advisers. ## Configure

### Upfront decisions

### The workplace

A workplace car park serves several groups at once, and separating them is the whole design problem.

A [voucher](/capabilities/access/voucher-access) is what makes this work on one set of chargers. It carries its own price and its own audience, so employees charge at a reduced rate on the same units where guests pay full price.

Where the site has both AC and DC chargers that should carry different prices, run them as separate locations at the same address. A location holds one tariff, so mixing the two leaves you unable to price them apart.

Publishing the site outside office hours is worth considering: the car park is full when your employees are in the building and empty when they aren't. [Location configuration](/capabilities/connection/location-configuration) covers opening hours and publishing.

### The employee's home

An [onboarding flow](/capabilities/automation/onboarding-flows) takes an employee from a benefit entitlement to a working charger. They place one order through your branded flow, and everything their setup needs is created and connected behind it, including an installation request routed to the installer covering their postcode.

The records it creates matter, because reimbursement depends on their shape. The employee becomes a customer in their own right, sitting beneath your fleet account, and the residential location at their address belongs to that employee record.

Three conditions then make a home session reimbursable:

* The location carries a **Company Car agreement** in Connect, linking it to your fleet account.
* The **location owner is the employee**, through that child customer record. Setting your own company as the owner because it bought the hardware is the common mistake, and it stops sessions being attributed.
* The charger **requires authentication**, so each session carries the employee's token.

<Warning>
  A home charger left in free-vend mode still charges the car, but its sessions carry no token and cannot be attributed to an employee. They never reach the expense report, so nobody is paid back for them. Check authentication is enabled on every home charger before an employee starts using it.

Employees can also control a home charger from the app, scheduling charging for the cheapest hours ahead. That works on charge box models Spirii has validated for it, so confirm the hardware you offer supports it before promising it as part of the benefit.

## Validate

Run one employee end to end before the rollout, covering all three places they charge.

    A session on the employee's home charger should appear against that employee, with an estimated cost attached. If it doesn't, check the Company Car agreement, the location owner, and authentication in that order.

    The home session should appear inside that employee's total on the monthly Fleet Expense Report, under **Reimbursements** in Connect, before you approve anything.

    A session on another operator's charger should land back in Connect against the same token, billed to `Acme Inc.`

  The setup is ready to roll out when you have:

  * A workplace session billed to the company at the right tariff
  * A home session attributed to the employee with a reimbursement amount
  * That session visible in a Fleet Expense Report
  * A public session billed to the company on the same token

## Operate

The workload here is people, not hardware. Employees join, change cars, move house, and leave, and each of those is a change in three places at once.

### The employee lifecycle

**Joining.** The onboarding flow does most of it. What remains is issuing the token, adding it to the workplace token group, and attaching the Company Car agreement to their home location.

**Leaving.** Disable the token instead of deleting it: a disabled token stops charging immediately and keeps the history it appears in, while a deleted token's identifier can never be reused. Then close out the final month's reimbursement. What happens to the charger at their address is a commercial question, not a platform one.

**Moving house.** The residential location is tied to an address, so a new address means a new location, a new Company Car agreement, and installation at the new property.

### Power at the workplace

Most employees arrive within the same hour, so a car park's demand peaks between 08:00 and 09:00 and stays flat for the rest of the day. [Load balancing](/capabilities/energy-management) distributes what the circuit allows across whatever is plugged in, so the site absorbs that peak without tripping a fuse or needing a bigger connection.

Where the car park sits idle overnight and at weekends, its chargers are a candidate for [grid balancing](/capabilities/energy-management/grid-balancing), which earns from brief adjustments to charging power when the grid needs them. It runs in Denmark today, and that page carries the hardware and portfolio requirements.

### Monitoring

Home chargers are the part you hear about last, because an employee whose charger has failed calls their fleet manager. ## Settle

Money runs through this setup in three directions.

**Home charging goes out to employees.** Each month the platform aggregates every employee's home sessions into a Fleet Expense Report, which you review, adjust, and approve under **Reimbursements** in Connect. Payment then follows the route you chose, and the employee receives their own report without submitting a claim. **Workplace and public charging is billed to the company.** Sessions on your own workplace chargers are internal, so attribution is what matters there. Sessions on other networks arrive as one consolidated invoice covering everything your drivers used. See [Token billing](/capabilities/billing-payouts/token-billing).

**Workplace revenue comes in, where you've opened the site.** Charging by employees' own cars and by visitors is collected by Spirii and paid out monthly, as at any public location. See [Understanding your payout](/capabilities/billing-payouts/payouts).

Because every session carries its token and customer, an [export](/capabilities/reporting-analytics/exports) splits the whole picture by employee, by site, or by cost centre, which is what a finance team needs to see the real cost per car.

## On the road

Company car drivers charge away from home and the office, and the same token covers it.

Enable roaming on each token, keep it active, and label it in the format [Roaming connection](/capabilities/roaming/roaming-connection) describes, so it authorises across the networks Spirii connects to. Those sessions bill to the company automatically, which is what turns the token into a fuel-card replacement.

## Continuous optimisation

The fleet changes shape as it electrifies. Early adopters are followed by employees who didn't take a company car first time round, so workplace demand keeps climbing after the reimbursement setup has settled. Revisit the car park's capacity before the queue forms.

The monthly rhythm is the expense report. Approving it is also the moment to read it: which employees charge almost entirely at home, which rely on public charging that costs several times as much, and where a workplace charger or a home installation would pay for itself.
